Bible Study: The Spiritual Warfare Weapons Week # 4

"The Shoes of Peace" (preparation of Gospel of peace)

Our Prayer:              Let's Pray

Heavenly Father, Your warrior prepares for battle. Today I claim victory over Satan by putting on the whole armor of God!  I put on the girdle of truth! May I stand firm in the truth of Your Word so I will not be a victim of Satan's lies. I put on the breastplate of righteousness! May it guard my heart from evil so I will remain pure and holy, protected under the blood of Jesus Christ. I put on the shoes of peace! May I stand firm in the Good News of the Gospel so Your peace will shine through me and be a light to all I encounter. I take the shield of faith! May I be ready for Satan's fiery darts of doubt, denial, and deceit so I will not be vulnerable to spiritual defeat. I take the Sword of the Spirit! May the two-edged sword of Your Word be ready in my hands so I can expose the tempting words of Satan. By faith we warriors have put on the whole armor of God! We are prepared to live this day, this week in spiritual victory! In Jesus' name, AMEN.

Our Scripture:                   Let's Read:       Ephesians 6:10-18

10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in  the spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:11–17 instructs believers in Christ to "put on the whole armor of God" as a defense against Satan's attacks. This armor includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. Verse 15 says, "And with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace." The New Living Translation words it this way: "For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared." The gospel of peace is the message that Jesus gave to those who trust in Him (John 14:27Romans 10:15). It comes with the assurance from God that we are His children and nothing can snatch us out of His hands (John 10:291 John 5:13). It outlines clearly what is required to become a child of God (1 Corinthians 15:1–6John 1:12Romans 10:8–10). Any other message is a false gospel.

The word readiness implies constant vigilance. A victorious soldier had to be prepared for battle. He had to have studied his enemy's strategy, be confident in his own strategy, and have his feet firmly planted so that he could hold his ground when the attacks came. A soldier's battle shoes were studded with nails or spikes, like cleats, to help him keep his balance in combat. He knew that, if he lost his footing and went down, it wouldn't matter how great the rest of his armor was; the enemy had him. When we are ready with the gospel of peace, we live with the understanding that we are continually under attack from Satan.
Second Timothy 4:2 says to "preach the word; be ready in season and out of season."

The "peace shoes" that God supplies His soldiers have two purposes: defensive and offensive. In order to defend ourselves against the "flaming arrows of the evil one" (
Ephesians 6:16), we must have confidence of our position in Christ. We must stand firm in the truth of God's Word, regardless of how terrifying the circumstances may be (1 John 5:14). We must understand grace without abusing it (Romans 6:1–6), remember that our position in Christ is not based on our own abilities or worthiness (Titus 3:5), and keep our belt of truth and breastplate of righteousness securely fastened (2 Timothy 1:12).

When Satan attacks with a flaming missile of doubt, such as "If God really loved you, He wouldn't have let this happen," we dig our peace shoes into the turf of God's Word and reply, "It is written: All things work together for the good to them who love God and are called according to His purpose" (
Romans 8:28). When Satan stabs from behind with "Remember what you did?" we dig in more deeply and reply, "It is written: If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

In addition to standing our ground, shoes are also for moving. God expects us to go on the offensive and take the gospel of peace to others.
First Peter 3:15 says, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have." Sharing our faith is one of the best ways to maintain our own sure footing. God knows that, when we are active in speaking of Him to others, we not only charge into Satan's territory, but we dig our shoes more deeply into truth and will be much harder to dislodge. When we have "studied to show ourselves approved unto God" (2 Timothy 2:15), we are ready to stand firm in the gospel of peace no matter what the enemy brings against us (2 Thessalonians 2:15).

Let's look at our study books now!

Day 1                 My Father's Shoes

This week you and I are going to put on our Father's shoes.  And by the Spirit's power, we are going to start seeing the tracks of peace he can make, not only in our own hearts, but also in our relationships and experiences with others. Perhaps the current status of things in your life makes you think no mere change of shoes can do anything to counteract the chaos and angst you're feeling and facing. But, yes-when those shoes are God's shoes, His footprints will start showing up everywhere you step. Hallelujah!!!

Anywhere peace is lacking, the enemy is at work! Please read pages for week # 4

Day 2                 "Digging In"

In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he pointed to this relationship as proof of the extraordinary power of God's peace-not just in theory, but in personal practice. It was strong enough to establish stability and harmony then, and it is powerful enough to do it now. Amen! There is so much to read in this study book; please read pages 101-103.

Day 3                 "The Hole in my Heart"

These shoes of peace can do a lot of walking (if we'll wear them) and take us to places we never thoughts we'd see in our lifetimes.

Only God's peace can dig in deep enough to offer the kind of anchoring, grounding, and security we need, keeping us from being knocked over and undone by a potent enemy who's always on the loose, and who specifically targets us in those areas where we're the weakest or most tender. False alternatives and cheap substitutes have never been and will never be sufficient replacements. Please read pages 106-112.

Day 4                          "Go Shoes"

We need fewer dress shoes and more go shoes-the kind that make us ready and prepared for battle. Having your feet fitted with the peace that the gospel brings, and that the Spirit utilizes to guide you onward, make you ready for anything the enemy tries to send your way. Hallelujah!

Standing firm is not only about digging in. It's about moving forward too. Please read pages 113-117.

Day 5                          "Strategy Session"

Please read pages 118-121, and you will find that prayer is the strategy for most everything in life itself. I read it and it is just what I do when I need a person that is a powerful prayer warrior. I call and ask them to pray with me concerning the situation in my life at the time. For instant, just a week ago I call/text my sisters and had them stand in prayer with me concerning my job.  It is so important to have peace in our life, and if we don't we can call someone to pray for us to get our peace back. In the shoes of the gospel of peace we can stand firm.

On page 118, it says, our peace is our instructor, guiding us, keeping us steady, assured, unwavering, even capable of smiling when everything in our environment  says we should be screaming for dear life.  This is our spiritual confidence, our peace from God (John 14:27), the legacy of peace.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN OUT OF THE LESSON?

We must not be slack in putting on the whole armor of God, because the Bible tells us to. This is our protection against the enemy of this world. We are no match for this enemy either. In putting on we must put off too. When we put off it means to get rid of those old ways of living, old ways of thinking, old ways of walking; we are told to be new creatures in Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior, (2 Corinthians 5:17).  We are not the same, but spiritual beings in the Lord, and must fight in the spirit too. But, we must remember it is not our fight, but Gods. The enemy comes against us because he hates us, and we have to let God do it for us by responding to His Word. The breastplate of righteousness is the right standard of God's Word. Unrighteousness is the enemy's attack against us daily. In Ephesians 6:14, Paul says, your uniform is righteous living. Righteousness is upright living that aligns with the Word of God. We should affirm God's standard and then align our behavior with His standard. The breastplate protects the heart, which is the center of our lives. The enemy's goal is to derail the train of our behavior off the tracks of God's standard. Our hearts is the center of our souls. So if wearing the breastplate, if all this "putting off" and "putting on" is proving particularly difficult lately, realize you're not alone. But realize something else too: you have an invisible partner every time you jump into battle and tug that breastplate over your heart. God is doing something this very minute to help you do what you otherwise could not. He is renewing your mind, realigning your passions and attitudes, and giving you strength to live a way that is pleasing to Him and a blessing to others. What a perfect alternative to practice.  And, we can do that because we are "Overcomers." How we overcome the evil within us? How we overcome the evil around us? From the book of Dr. David Jeremiah "Overcomer" we learn that Jesus did it all on the cross, and all we have to do is accept Him as our Savior and trust Him. When we accept Him, we leave our vengeance with God, we learn to plan ahead, we live peaceably with all men, we let good overcome evil, and we love our enemy. WOW!

We have the greatest example we could ever want of overcoming evil with good in the person of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. When we put on His breastplate of righteousness, we are freed from slavery to the impulse to repay evil for evil. We are set free by His Holy Spirit to be an overcomer who repays evil with good. If you have not made Christ your Savior and Lord, do so today and begin wearing your breastplate of righteousness.  I have enjoyed this lesson!

MY ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS

Questions:

1).     Read Psalm 18:32-36, explain what you find.

To me, this is the armor of God according to King David. God is our help at all times.

2).    Why should we put on the whole armor of God?

We put on the whole of armor of God in order to stand firm against the attacks of our enemy, Satan.

3).    What is this piece "breastplate" is design for?

It is specially designed by God to protect our hearts and souls from evil and deception, because our righteous acts are no match for Satan's attacks (Isaiah 64:6). The breastplate of righteousness has Christ's name stamped on it, as though He said, "Your righteousness isn't sufficient to protect you. Wear mine."
4).    Putting on the armor of God requires a_______.

This requires a decision on our part.

5).    Read Matthew 6:33, explain this concerning the armor.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." God always comes first in our personal lives, we are to pray and seek His face about everything, so He can defend us in all matters.

6).    Share another way we put on our armor.

Another way we put on our armor is to obey God.

7).    When armor is abused or worn incorrectly, it can____.

If this is worn incorrectly, it can malfunction.

8).    There several factors that can interfere with the effectiveness of our spiritual breastplate, name some.

Carelessness (1 Peter 5:8), unbelief (Hebrews 3:12), abusing grace (Romans 6:1–2), or disobedience (1 John 3:4Hebrews 4:6) can hinder our ability to stand firm and defeat the enemy in our lives.

9).    Putting this breastplate on is practicing what?

It is setting a stand of what we believe in God in our hearts. When we practice putting on this armor, our choices become more righteous, and these godly choices also protect us from further temptation and deception as said in (Proverbs 8:20; Psalm 23:3).

10).  When we don't have an intimate relationship with God, how does this affects us?

If we don't spend time with God, this allow earthly concerns to crowd out time for God, then our relationship cannot grow. And, taking off this piece minimize the power we need to protect us.

11).   Reading the study book gives us the heart of the matter, what is it?

The heart of the matter is to guard our hearts above all else, and it is the source of life for us.

12).  Between perfect, comparative, and imputed righteousness, which one defines us?

"Perfect righteousness discourage us; comparative righteousness deceive us; imputed righteousness defines us and declares us innocent before all accusers." Glory to God!

13).  What is God doing right now to help you do what you cannot do?

WOW!! I have been so busy with work, and this is one thing God is doing in my life right now; He is helping me keep my mind stayed on Him. Trust Him always, and to stay focus and keep on the whole armor of God.

14).  Meditating on God's Word help you in what way?

Oh my, I try to meditate every day, but sometimes I can't. It helps me to stay focus. It help me to stay strong in God, because in His presence my whole being is renewed. I feel so different when I meditate on God's Word and Who God is in my life, and what He is doing in my life. Truly, He is awesome! I had all the prayer warriors to pray for me concerning my retirement, and God has answered that prayer. I believe I am headed in the right direction concerning His will for me right now.

15).   What did you get out of this week's strategy session?

Keep your mind on Jesus, and do what God's Holy Spirit led you to do, and that is, to put on the whole armor of God daily. We are to walk in love, just as Christ also loved us. Christ gave Himself for us and we are to give up ourselves to for the glory of God in our lives; we must remember that the old man is dead and gone, and we no longer a slave to the flesh, to sin, to unrighteousness. I have been made free in Christ Jesus with new life. AMEN!!

Let Us Pray!

Prayer:

Thank You for showing me the truth about myself -- that on my own I could never be good enough to live in your presence. Thank you for taking my sins to the cross and offering me your perfect, RIGHTEOUS life.  Lord, show me any sin that I need to confess right now, so that nothing will hinder me from being filled to overflowing with your Spirit. [Take time for confession] Thank you for forgiving me and for filling me with your RIGHTEOUS life.

Bible Study: The Spiritual Warfare Weapons Week # 3

"The Breastplate of Righteousness"

Ephesians 6:11 exhorts believers to "put on the whole armor of God" in order to stand firm against the attacks of our enemy, Satan (2 Corinthians 10:4Ephesians 6:12). Verses 14 through 17 say, "Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

The imagery is of an armed Roman or Israelite soldier, prepared for battle. A typical armed soldier wore a breastplate made of bronze or chain mail. It covered the vital organs, namely, the heart, and was fitted with loops or buckles that attached it to a thick belt. If the belt was loosened, the breastplate slipped right off.

When Paul compares the armor of God with military gear, each piece represents a part of God's strength that He extends to us when we become His children. The breastplate of righteousness refers to the righteousness purchased for us by Jesus at the cross (
2 Corinthians 5:21). At salvation, a "breastplate" is issued to each repentant sinner. It is specially designed by God to protect our heart and soul from evil and deception. Our own righteous acts are no match for Satan's attacks (Isaiah 64:6). The breastplate of righteousness has Christ's name stamped on it, as though He said, "Your righteousness isn't sufficient to protect you. Wear mine."

We are instructed to "put on" this armor, which implies that we do not automatically wear it all the time. Putting on the armor of God requires a decision on our part. To put on the breastplate of righteousness, we must first have the belt of truth firmly in place. Without truth, our righteousness will be based upon our own attempts to impress God. This leads to legalism or self-condemnation (
Romans 8:1). We choose instead to acknowledge that, apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5). We see ourselves as "in Christ" and that, regardless of our failures, His righteousness has been credited to our account.

We "put it on" by seeking God and His righteousness above everything else (
Matthew 6:33). We make Him and His ways our dwelling place (Psalm 91:1). We delight in His commands and desire for His ways to become our ways (Psalm 37:4119:24111Isaiah 61:10). When God reveals an area of change to us, we obey and allow Him to work in us. At the point where we say "no" to God, we open a little crack in the armor where Satan's arrows can get through (Ephesians 6:16).

As we wear Christ's breastplate of righteousness, we begin to develop a purity of heart that translates into actions. Wearing this breastplate creates a lifestyle of putting into practice what we believe in our hearts. As our lives become conformed to the image of Christ (
Romans 8:29), our choices become more righteous, and these godly choices also protect us from further temptation and deception (Proverbs 8:20Psalm 23:3).

When armor is abused or worn incorrectly, it can malfunction. Likewise, there are several factors that can interfere with the effectiveness of our spiritual breastplate. Carelessness (
1 Peter 5:8), unbelief (Hebrews 3:12), abusing grace (Romans 6:1–2), or disobedience (1 John 3:4Hebrews 4:6) can hinder our ability to stand firm and defeat the enemy in our lives. When we tolerate sin, refuse to forgive (2 Corinthians 2:10–11), rely on personal righteousness (Titus 3:5), or allow earthly concerns to crowd out time for an intimate relationship with God, we, in effect, take off the breastplate of righteousness, minimizing its power to protect us.

We need our breastplate of righteousness in place in order to gain the victory specified in
2 Corinthians 10:15: "We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ." When we quickly reject heretical ideas, idolatry, and the "counsel of the ungodly" (Psalm 1:1) and instead "keep our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2), we keep our breastplate securely fastened.

Let's look at our study books now!

Day 1                  The Heart of the matter

Proverbs 4:23 says, "Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.  Please remember to read your study guide book from each study.

So your heart is the seat of your life. The source! And what the physical heart is to your physical life, the spiritual heart is to your spiritual life. Glory to God! These are so encouraging to read. The Bible tells us to guard our hearts.

Righteousness literally means justice- the equality of being upright, fulfilling the expectations set in a relationship. In our case as believers, this relationship is with God Himself. Righteousness, then, is upright living that aligns with God's expectations.

Day 2                 The Clean Sweep

What the breastplate did for the Roman soldier's physical heart, righteousness does for your spiritual heart. That is good stuff!  Guard it. Protect it. Shields it from your enemy's attempts to exact fatal blows to this life-giving source in your soul.  But understanding how to utilize this piece of spiritual armor requires you to truly understand what righteousness is and how it works.  Please read day 2 for more information.  I like this! "Perfect righteousness discourage you; comparative righteousness deceive you; imputed righteousness defines you and declares you innocent before all accusers."

Day 3                 Perfect Makes Practice

To wear the breastplate of righteousness properly, we need to switch things up a bit. Righteousness is in you, now it needs to be on you! I know it doesn't often feel this way, but your new self is the righteous nature and the very holiness of God (imputed righteousness). That's the real you. At your core, you are pulsing with the new life of Christ. And guess what? "The fruit of the light results in all goodness, righteousness, and truth" (Ephesians 5:9). He's just amazing that way. So if wearing the breastplate-if all this "putting off" and "putting on" is proving particularly difficult lately-realize you're not alone. But realize something else too; you have an invisible partner every time you jump into battle and tug that breastplate over your heart. God is doing something this very minute to help you do what you otherwise could not.  He is renewing your mind, realigning your passions and attitudes, and giving you strength to live in a way that is pleasing to Him and a blessing to others. What a perfect alternative to practice.

Day 4                Pickles and Ice Cream

Meditating on God's Word, internalizing its principles, and then implementing them in your actions is what supports the work of God's Spirit in renewing your soul.  In growing you. In changing your taste buds.   In adapting what you find most appetizing and fulfilling. If you only skim Scripture while you're half asleep or as an afterthought between appointments, letting it go in one ear and coming out the other with little thought or determined interest, you'll never receive the full benefits of what the living, active Word of God is prepared to produce in your life. As we'll learn a bit later in this Bible study, God's Word is the Spirit's "sword." It's not only what He uses to grow you up and save your soul, but also to combat the enemy's attempts to do damage to you.  Please read more on pages 86-90. You'll get the big picture!

Day 5                 Strategy Session

As we come to the end of this beautiful week of study in the unchanging Word of our Almighty God, make a battle plan for wearing your breastplate. "Be imitators of God . . . and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us" (Ephesians 5:1-2). The old man is dead and gone. You are no longer a slave to the flesh, to sin, to unrighteousness. You have been set free in Jesus and given new life.
